ORIGIN: Zefiro M ODYSSES's Aeolian scale comes from one of the Harmonai (musical modes) of ancient Greece.
DESCRIPTION: The Aeolian scale corresponds, in modern use, to the natural minor scale. The key of B-flat (Bb) gives it a sort of singing voice, which we like to compare to the sound of the wind on the sea.
MEANING OF THE NAME: the historical region of Aeolis is the one that provides the name for the correspondent Greek musical mode. According to the myth, Aeolis was founded by the descendants of Aeolus, god of the winds. In Homer's Odyssey, Aeolus gives Ulysses a bag where all the winds have been trapped. The only one left out of the bag is supposed to take Ulysses and his companions back to Ithaca. That particular wind is the wind of the West or Zephyr ("Zefiro" in italian).
